Functionally, the sinus node is the primary pacemaker centre of the heart and is therefore involved in the complex regulation of the heart rate. The sinus node has the central role of excitation formation. It generates excitation volleys with a resting frequency of 60-70 impulses per minute. The pulses are used to excite the atrial myocardium, as the atrial excitation wave propagates towards the ventricles. The sinuatrial ramus nodi provides blood flow to the sinus node.
