Structure of the clavicle (Clavicula)

Location of the clavicle

The clavicle, Clavicula, is an "S"-shaped curved bone. Medially forward facing, the bone has a convexity that occupies about 2/3 of the length, and laterally forward facing, it is concave.

Between the thickened end (Extremitas sternalis, towards the sternum) and the flat end (Extremitas acromialis, towards the shoulder blade) lies the Corpus claviculae. The sternal end covers a three-sided articular surface, Facies articularis sternalis. The articular surface at the other end of the clavicle, the Facies articularis acromialis, is approximately oval.

Near the Extremitas sternalis the Tuberositas lig. costoclavicularis is located at the lower surface of the clavicle. The Sulcus m. subclavii is located on the undersurface of the Corpus claviculae.

Near the acromial end there is a hump on the lower surface, Tuberculum conoideum. In front and laterally of it there is the Linea trapezoidea.

Joints

The clavicle is connected to the sternum and the shoulder blade via two joints:

  • Sternoclavicular joint: Connection of Extremitas sternalis with the Manubrium sterni of the sternum
  • Acromioclavicular joint: Connection of Extremitas acromialis with the Acromion of the scapula

To explore the clavicles freely, start the WebSegmenter.
