Bewegungen in drei Freiheitsgraden sind möglich. Man spricht von Abduktion und Adduktion, wobei man von der Ruhestellung des Caput humeri in der Scapula-Ebene ausgeht. Man kennt die Anteversion, das nach vorne Heben des Armes und ihre Gegenbewegung, die Retroversion.
