Das Herz-Kreislauf-System besteht aus dem Herzen (lat. Cor) und den Blutgefäßen. Der Blutkreislauf wird durch zwei hintereinander durchlaufene Kreisläufe gebildet, der Körper- und der Lungenkreislauf. Dabei verteilt der Körperkreislauf (auch "großer Kreislauf") das sauerstoffreiche Blut ausgehend von der linken Herzkammer im Körper. Das sauerstoffarme Blut wird zum Herzen zurückgeführt. Der Lungenkreislauf führt das sauerstoffarme Blut zur Lunge und das sauerstoffreiche zum Herzen zurück.
