Das proximale Ende des Wadenbeins ist durch eine kugelähnliche Knochenstruktur gekennzeichnet, dies ist der Wadenbeinkopf (Caput fibulae). An seiner Innenseite befindet sich eine Gelenkfläche, die Facies articularis capitis fibulae. Über diese stellt das Wadenbein die Verbindung zum Schienbein her. An der kranialen Seite des Wadenbeinkopfes befindet sich ein kleiner Knochenvorsprung. Dieser wird als Apex capitis fibulae bezeichnet.
