Der Schultergürtel hat eine paarweise knöcherne Struktur und besteht sowohl auf der rechten als auch auf der linken Körperhälfte aus der Scapula und der Clavicula. 
Das Schlüsselbein ist ein s-förmig gebogener [[Special:MyLanguage/Röhrenknochen|Röhrenknochen]]. Das Schulterblatt dagegen wird durch einen platten dreieckigen Knochen, der in Muskelschlingen eingelagert ist, gebildet. 
Durch den Schultergürtel werden die freien oberen Extremitäten (Arme) mit dem Rumpf verbunden. Die direkte Verbindung besteht durch das Sternoklavikulargelenk, auch mediales Schlüsselbeingelenk. Dies ist der Punkt an dem Clavicula und [[Special:MyLanguage/Brustbein|Sternum]] aufeinander treffen und stellt die einzige knöcherne Verbindung der oberen Extremitäten zum Rumpf dar.
